Malaika Kegode & JAKABOL

Malaika Kegode biography

Malaika Kegode is a poet and performer based in Bristol. She has performed around the UK at a number of celebrated venues, festivals and poetry events.

She has worked closely with spoken word trailblazers Apples and Snakes to host Spokes Amaze, and has curated her own event Milk Poetry in Bristol since 2015. She was shortlisted for the Out-Spoken Poetry Prize in 2019.

Malaika’s work tells of how we can find beauty and hope through the darkness. Her overall themes of family, mental health, addiction and love always have an undercurrent of optimism and strength. Her debut poetry collection Requite was published by Burning Eye Books in 2017.

JAKABOL is an experimental music collective consisting of harp, violin, keys, drums and guitar. Inspired by the energy of bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, the band fuse world folk influences with progressive textures and explosive riffs.

JAKABOL has been collaborating with Malaika since 2018. Now 2020, these artists have come together with theatre maker Jenny Davies to create a narrative gig-theatre show called Outlier.

We are excited to announce that Malaika and JAKABOL will be contributing to The Soundscape Poetry Project – To be released by Culture Recordings later this year.
